About Coral Blossom Tree
A single slender tree sits just right of centre, its dark near-black trunk rising from the bottom edge and splitting into thin arching branches that spread the full width of the canvas. Dozens of small white five-petal blossoms are pressed on in thick dabs, each with a pale yellow centre, clustering heavily along the upper branches and thinning out towards the left tips. Behind the tree the background is worked in short flat knife strokes of coral and salmon orange, opening into a halo of pale ice blue and grey-white around the crown and lower trunk.
The paint stands well off the surface, so the ridges of the knife marks catch light across the coral field and the raised petals throw small shadows. Its character is bright and graphic, with warm orange and clean white doing all the work.
Works above a low sideboard or a bed in a room with white or pale grey walls, where the coral can act as the only strong colour. Pairs well with pale timber, linen bedding, brass lamps and cream rugs. The long landscape shape suits a hallway run or the wall behind a two-seat sofa.
