About Hydrangea Blooms
A bank of hydrangea heads fills the lower two thirds of the upright canvas, each dome built from dozens of small thick knife-loaded dabs in violet, cobalt, aqua and white. The heads sit at different heights and sizes, the largest near the centre and left, smaller ones tucked at the bottom edge. Dark teal and emerald leaves press between them in broad sweeping strokes. Above the flowers the sky is smooth and thin, graduating from soft blue at the top to a warm cream near the horizon line of blooms.
Flicks of lemon yellow, pink and a touch of red break the green at the upper right, suggesting further blooms behind. The paint stands proud of the surface in ridges, catching light across the flower heads, while the sky stays flat by contrast. The character is bright and cheerful, a close-up garden view that reads as pure colour and texture from a few steps back.
Works above a bed with white linen, in a hallway that needs colour, or over a sideboard in a dining room. The violets and aquas pair with grey or pale timber walls, rattan and green indoor plants.
