About Ballerina Trio
Three figures stand side by side, each reduced to a curved knife-drawn line for the body, a small bead of paint for the head and a wide skirt built from heavy ridges of white. The left tutu is cobalt blue streaked with green and yellow, the centre one deep red shot with orange, and the right one bright marigold. Fine dark lines sweep upward from the shoulders like raised arms. Behind them the background runs from pale cream at the top into a dark bottle green along the base, dragged vertically with a blade.
The paint sits high off the canvas, particularly along the frilled hems where white is laid in thick overlapping flicks. It reads as movement caught mid-curtsey rather than a literal portrait of dancers.
Suits a girl's bedroom, a music or dance room, a hallway or a living area with pale walls where the dark green base grounds the composition. Works above a white sideboard or a piano, and pairs with soft grey upholstery, blonde timber and a touch of brass in lamps or frames. Browse more knife paintings, music art, square paintings.
