About Three Ballerinas
Three stylised dancers stand side by side across a square canvas, each reduced to a thin curved line for the arms and torso and a small dab of paint for the head. The tutus carry all the weight: the left dancer wears blue and green with white frilled edges, the centre dancer a deep red skirt streaked with yellow, and the right dancer a broad gold and cream skirt. Paint is laid on thickly with a knife, ridged and peaked at the hems so the ruffles catch light. The background is dragged vertically in cream, tan and rust, darkening to red-brown along the lower third.
The character is light and rhythmic, all movement carried by three curved lines and three loaded skirts rather than by any drawn detail.
Suits a lounge room, dining wall or bedroom where warm reds and golds already appear in rugs, timber or cushions. Works above a sideboard or a bedhead, and pairs well with cream walls, brass lamps and oak furniture. Popular in music rooms, dance schools and girls' bedrooms where a single square focal piece is wanted. Browse more knife paintings, multi-coloured art, square paintings.
