About Golden Tulip Impasto
A cluster of tulip heads rises across a wide landscape canvas, each bud built up in thick ochre and honey-gold paint pressed on with a palette knife so the petal edges catch the light. The stems are painted as single thin black strokes that curve and lean outward, some crossing, others bending almost to the lower edge. Behind them the background is worked in blocky knife strokes: cool slate grey and white on the left, a pale cream glow through the centre, then deepening yellow into brick red, rust and near-black at the right edge.
The effect reads like a row of tulips standing against a wall lit from one side, cool at one end and burning warm at the other. The heavy ridges of paint on the buds give the surface real relief, while the flat knife-scraped background keeps the composition calm and graphic.
Built for a wide wall: above a low sideboard, a three-seater sofa, or along a hallway where the grey-to-red shift can be seen from a distance. It works with charcoal and oatmeal upholstery, warm timber floors and brass or copper lamps, and suits dining rooms where a single long horizontal piece is wanted.
