About Bottle Jazz Band
Four wine and champagne bottles stand in for a jazz band, each given shoulders, arms and a tilted hat built from short palette knife slabs. At the lower left a bottle in red leans over a white and gold keyboard, the keys laid in with long sweeping strokes. Behind it a pale bottle handles a saxophone, while a green-capped figure holds an upright bass. On the right a large gold champagne bottle with a white label dominates the foreground, its neck wrapped in foil.
The background is pure knife work: chips of cobalt, turquoise, crimson, yellow and orange packed edge to edge with no blending, so the light behind the players reads as a lit club wall. Paint sits high on the surface and catches the light from the side. It is a witty, high-energy picture with real thickness to it, funny at first glance and increasingly musical the longer you look.
Suits a bar area, wine cellar, dining room or rumpus room where a strong colour hit is welcome. It works over a sideboard with glassware, against charcoal, navy or warm white walls, and alongside timber and brass.
