About Silver Poppies on Blue
A wide canvas is built from short, square palette-knife strokes laid side by side like tiles. The top third is pale - white, soft grey and watery blue - and the colour deepens as it falls, through cobalt and teal to dark navy and a band of plum-brown along the lower edge. Rising from the bottom are dozens of thin, straight stems scratched in pale blue and white, each topped with a thickly loaded circular flower head in cream and off-white, ridged where the knife lifted away.
The flower heads sit proud of the surface in raised rings, catching light from the side so the discs read almost as buttons or small silver coins. It is a calm, orderly painting with a strong sense of rhythm, ordered but not stiff, and the texture does as much work as the colour.
Suits a wide space above a sofa, sideboard or bedhead where the panoramic shape can stretch out. The cool blues work with white or grey walls, pale oak and linen upholstery, and the cream flower heads pick up brass or nickel lamps.
