About Red Birch Lovebirds
A grove of slender birch trunks fills the left third of the canvas, painted in thick white and charcoal knife strokes with dark eye-shaped bark markings. Above and around them, petal-like dabs of red, scarlet and orange crowd the branches and scatter downward like falling leaves. A thin bare branch reaches out to the right, where two small red birds sit side by side. Behind them a small white sun hangs over horizontal bands of pale yellow, cream, teal and steel blue.
The lower right of the picture drops into warm browns, ochre and rust, laid on in long horizontal sweeps that read as open ground or still water. Brushwork is loose and directional across the sky, while the leaves and trunks are built up in raised ridges of paint you can see from the side. It is a warm, quiet piece with one clear focal point: the pair of birds against the sun.
Built for a long wall above a three-seater sofa, a sideboard or a bed head. The red and gold sit well with timber floors, tan leather, cream or clay-painted walls. It suits open-plan living rooms and dining spaces, and pairs with brass lamps, linen cushions and a jute rug rather than cool grey schemes.
