About Autumn Birch Grove
Five or six birch trunks rise the full height of this square canvas, leaning slightly right, their white bark broken by black scars and rings of grey and tan. The sky behind them is built from short blocks of cobalt, mid blue and pale ice blue, with white patches showing through near the top. Clusters of scarlet, orange and crimson leaves press in from the left edge, along the upper branches and across the low ground, where olive green strokes mark grass between the trunks.
Paint sits thick and ridged, laid on with a palette knife so each trunk and leaf cluster stands off the surface and catches light. The effect is bold and close-up rather than distant: you are standing among the trees, not looking at them from across a field.
Works in a living room above a low sideboard, in an entry hall, or in a dining room where the red leaves pick up timber and terracotta tones. The strong blue holds its own against white or pale grey walls, and it pairs well with oak furniture, linen upholstery and indoor greenery.
