About Birch Grove First Snow
A stand of birches fills the frame, their white trunks marked with black scars and running from the base of the canvas to the top edge. Behind them the canopy is a broad band of yellow and orange leaves, broken by small flecks of violet and pale pink where the sky shows through. The foreground is a frozen forest floor: thick ridges of white, lilac and pale blue paint laid on with a knife, cut by dark navy channels of open water and wet ground.
Thin brown saplings lean in from the left, drawn with fine liner strokes against the heavier knife work. The painting reads as a bright cold morning where snow has fallen before the last leaves have dropped, warm overhead and icy underfoot.
Works in a living room above a low sideboard, in a dining room with oak or ash timber, or along a wide hallway. The yellow canopy lifts grey, white and stone walls, and it sits well with cream linen, brass lamps and pale timber floors. Good above a fireplace in a cooler room.
