About Crimson Birch Grove
Slim white birch trunks stand in close rows across the full width of the canvas, marked with short black scars and painted in thick ridges of white that catch the light. Behind them the lower half of the picture burns with red, crimson and orange, warming to yellow at the centre where a bright patch reads as low sun through the trees. The upper half shifts to pale turquoise and soft blue sky. Thin dark branches reach out from each trunk.
Leaves are dabbed on with a palette knife in small flat flecks of scarlet, gold, turquoise, dark brown and white, sitting well above the surface. The overall character is bright and decorative, built on the contrast between the cool vertical whites and the heat of the red understorey.
Built for a wide wall: above a long sofa, a sideboard in a dining room, or the length of a hallway. The red and gold ground suits timber floors, tan leather and warm neutral walls, while the turquoise flecks pick up teal cushions or ceramics.
