About Lamplit Stairway
Two flights of stone steps climb away from the viewer, separated by an iron handrail that runs diagonally up the right of the canvas. A tall black lamp post stands in the left foreground, its glass lantern catching the pale light, while a second lamp rises mid-picture and four smaller ones recede up the slope. Bare trees lean in from both top corners, their thin branches drawn in dark rust and near-black over a washed cream and grey ground.
The mood is quiet and wintry, the paint thin and scrubbed across the steps with darker knife-pulled marks for the railings and trunks. Small flecks of dark pigment sit on the lower steps like grit or melting snow. It reads as a hushed early-evening walk with no figures in sight.
Suits a hallway, stair landing or entry where a tall, narrow picture fits between doors. The charcoal and cream palette works with grey or white walls, oak floors and black-framed mirrors, and sits well beside linen sofas, brass lamps and monochrome photography in a lounge or reading corner.
