About Autumn Lamplight Walk
A path curves from the lower centre into a burst of pale yellow light at the middle of the canvas, where a couple walk away arm in arm, painted in a few strokes of grey-green and dark red. Overhead the canopy is built from thick knife-laid slabs of scarlet, orange, crimson and yellow, with flecks of green and patches of deep blue showing through as sky. Two round lamps glow white on slim posts at the left.
Wet ground carries long vertical reflections: white streaks under the lamps, warm gold across the centre of the path, and dark red where the foliage mirrors in the puddles at lower left. At right a bare dark trunk leans over a bank of cream and pale yellow, its branches thin against the light. The mood is warm and quiet, with heavy ridged paint giving the leaves real relief under raking light.
Suits a living room with warm timber floors, a hallway that needs a point of colour at the end, or a dining room with cream or clay-coloured walls. It sits well above a leather sofa or a sideboard, and pairs with brass lamps, rust and ochre cushions, and dark-stained furniture.
