About Winter Birch Grove
A dozen slender birch trunks stand across the full width of the canvas, leaning at slightly different angles so the spacing never repeats. The trunks are painted in pale lemon and cream with grey-black scars at the branch joints, and darker bases where they meet the snow. Behind them the forest is built from blocks of orange, gold, crimson and violet laid on with a knife, with a cool lilac sky showing through at the upper left. Thin bare twigs carry small ridges of white snow.
The lower third is deep snow, worked in white, cream, pink and cornflower blue, with long blue shadows running diagonally from the base of each trunk. Paint is thick and blocky throughout, the knife edges catching light along every stroke. The character is bright and warm-cold at once: a cold winter floor lit by a burning autumn backdrop.
Suits a living room or hallway with white or pale grey walls, where the orange and violet blocks can carry the colour scheme. Works above a light timber sideboard, a linen sofa or a bed head in a bedroom. Pairs with brass lamps, woven rugs and pale oak furniture rather than heavy dark timber.
