About Rainy Day Umbrellas
Six figures walk away from the viewer across a rain-soaked street, each under an umbrella built from thick knife-loaded strokes. The canopies alternate between blue and white, red and blue stripes, and a dark plum dome on the right. The walkers are painted in near-black navy, plum and deep red, with slim legs narrowing into the wet ground. Behind them the background is scraped in pale lilac, grey and cream with flicks of yellow suggesting shopfront light through drizzle.
The lower third is given over to reflections: horizontal ribbons of red, cobalt, yellow and violet dragged sideways so the figures repeat upside down in broken bands. Paint sits high off the canvas, with ridges and knife edges catching light. It is a busy, high-contrast piece that reads as a crowd from across a room and as pure blocks of colour up close.
Suits an entry hall, a living room with white or grey walls, or a cafe-style dining space where the reflections sit at eye level. Works with mid-century timber furniture, a charcoal sofa, or navy upholstery, and picks up red or cobalt cushions. Give it clear wall space so the thick colour bands are not crowded.
