About Autumn Birch Grove
A wide band of slender birch trunks runs the full width of the canvas, painted in chalky white with grey-brown scars and knots, their thin dark branches reaching sideways into the foliage. Between and behind them the canopy is built from thousands of small dabbed leaves in lemon yellow, marigold orange and scarlet, with a deep red field filling the upper background. Patches of soft green appear low down near the forest floor, along with a single small dark conifer standing among the orange undergrowth at centre-left.
There is no sky and no horizon, so the eye travels across the trunks rather than into distance. The paint sits thick and flat, each leaf a separate stroke, giving the picture a bright, decorative, almost mosaic quality.
Suits a long wall above a sofa, a sideboard in an open-plan living room, or a hallway that needs colour at one end. The white trunks work with pale walls and light timber, while the red and orange pick up rust cushions, terracotta pots, brass lamps and warm-toned rugs.
