About Golden Birch Grove
A dense stand of birch trunks fills the whole width of the canvas, painted in cream, pale grey and warm white with short black scars and knots marking the bark. The trunks run vertically from top to bottom, some thick and close to the viewer, others thin and set back into a dark grey-green gap between the trees. Above, the canopy is built from thick dabs of yellow, gold and orange leaves laid on with a knife, with fine dark twigs drawn across them.
The lower third is a band of bright red foliage, applied in blunt knife strokes that catch the light and sit clearly above the canvas surface. The contrast of red below, yellow above and pale trunks between gives the painting a bold, graphic feel while the heavy paint keeps it looking hand-worked rather than flat.
The long panoramic shape suits a wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bedhead, and works well in a hallway where you see it from an angle. The red and gold read strongly against white, grey or charcoal walls, and pair with timber furniture, black metal frames and warm neutral linen.
