About Violet Birch Meadow
A long horizontal band of slender birch trunks rises through a meadow of flowers. The trunks alternate between chalky white and near-black, some leaning slightly, and they thin to fine dark branches against a pale blue and white sky. The lower half is packed with round palette-knife blooms in violet, lavender, magenta and deep maroon, with scattered scarlet and orange dots higher up among olive-green grasses. Foliage at the top is dabbed in olive, ochre, rust and dark brown, each mark left as a thick separate touch of paint.
There is no single focal point; the eye travels sideways along the trunks and the ridge of flowers. The character is bright and busy, with the raised knife-work catching light across the surface.
Suits a long wall above a sofa, sideboard or bed head, and works well in a living room or entry with white or pale grey walls. The violet and olive sit comfortably with linen upholstery, timber floors and rattan or woven baskets. Good in dining rooms where a wide, colourful strip balances a long table.
