About Scarlet Poppy Field
Around twenty red poppies stand at different heights across a wide landscape canvas, each bloom built from short palette knife strokes that leave ridges of paint sitting above the surface. The petals range from bright scarlet to deeper orange-red, with small dabs of yellow and black at the centres. Thin dark stems, painted in near-black and brown, rise in slightly curved lines from a heavy band of brown, rust and charcoal at the base. Behind the flowers the sky is scraped in cream, white, ochre and flecks of pale blue.
The effect is loose and energetic rather than botanical: the poppies read clearly as flowers, but the surrounding paint stays broken and abstract. It is a bright, high-contrast piece where the red does all the talking against a warm neutral field.
Works above a sideboard in a dining room, along a hallway, or over a bed where a single hit of red is wanted. Suits white, grey or oatmeal walls and timber furniture, and sits well with linen upholstery, brass lamps and terracotta pots. Pairs with plain, uncluttered decor rather than other patterned art.
