About Purple Bloom Vase
A wide spray of small purple flowers fans out across a square canvas, rising from a tall, narrow vase painted in black and grey knife strokes. Each bloom is a single thick dab of violet with a pale grey or white centre, laid on so heavily the paint stands off the surface and casts its own shadow. Loose black and silver-grey marks run between the flowers, suggesting stems and leaves. The background is a cream-white field, scraped and dragged with the knife so ridges and flat planes catch the light.
Fallen petals in purple and black scatter down towards the base, breaking the symmetry of the bouquet. The character is bold and graphic: a limited palette of purple, black and cream with the texture doing most of the work.
Works above a sideboard, hallway console or bed head in a room with white or pale grey walls, where the raised paint catches side light. Pairs with black-framed mirrors, chrome or brushed-nickel lamps, and cushions or throws in plum, lilac or charcoal. Suits a square wall between two doors or windows.
