About Violet Posy Impasto
A rounded bouquet of small violet and lilac flowers fills the upper two thirds of this square canvas, spilling out on both sides and trailing a few loose blooms down towards the base. Each flower is made from three or four short knife strokes of thick paint, so the petals stand off the surface and catch the light, with dark plum centres pressed into the middle. Lime and grass green leaves push through the gaps on thin stems. Below, a short black vase sits in heavy, glossy paint.
The cream background is laid on just as thickly, worked in criss-crossing knife marks that leave a cracked, plaster-like grain around the flowers. Colour is limited to violet, green, black and off-white, which keeps the arrangement crisp rather than busy. The character is simple and cheerful: a small posy treated boldly, with all the interest in the raised paint and the contrast between the pale wall and the dark vase.
Suits a hallway, bedroom or dining wall where a single square works on its own. The cream ground sits easily against white, grey or soft green walls, and the violets pick up linen cushions, timber furniture and brass or black metal details.
