About Coastal Poppy Fields
A wide field of red poppies runs across the lower two thirds of the canvas, laid down in thick horizontal ribbons of scarlet over bands of chrome and lemon yellow. The knife work leaves raised ridges that catch light along each row, and the strokes shorten towards the back so the field appears to recede. A line of shrubs, leafy round-headed trees and slim dark cypresses closes the far edge of the field, with small patches of mauve and blue flowers tucked at their base.
Beyond the trees a strip of pale blue water carries two tiny white sails, backed by a low blue-grey headland and a soft grey and cream sky brushed smooth. The contrast between the heavily loaded field and the thinly painted sky gives the painting its bright, open, sunlit character.
