About Tuscan Poppy Field
A tall upright canvas looks straight down a meadow of red poppies. The flowers begin as small flecks near the horizon and grow into thick, individually loaded blooms along the bottom edge, where petals of scarlet and crimson sit on ridges of paint a few millimetres proud of the canvas. Bands of lemon yellow and bright green run between the red drifts, suggesting grass and buttercups. Above the field a dark hedge of trees screens four white villas with terracotta roofs, flanked by slim cypress and a pale, feathery tree at the right.
The sky is clear blue with soft white cloud and a faint blue ridge of hills at the left. Everything is laid with a palette knife: flat scraped planes for sky and grass, short stabbing marks for the flower heads. Its character is cheerful and sunlit, a simple rural view carried mostly by colour and the physical thickness of the paint.
The tall, narrow shape suits a stair wall, a hallway between doors, or the strip of wall beside a fireplace or tall window. The red and yellow lift white, grey or pale timber rooms, and it works well in a country kitchen, dining room or sunroom with linen, rattan and green plants nearby.
