About Poppy Field Farmhouse
A tall upright composition looks straight down a poppy field towards a line of low hills. The lower two thirds are packed with red blooms laid on with a palette knife, short flat strokes of scarlet and crimson broken by yellow-green stems and dark seed heads. At the very front the flowers grow larger and looser, individual petals scraped in thick red over tall grass. Behind the poppies a flat yellow-green pasture leads to three or four white farmhouses with terracotta roofs, dark cypress trees and a soft grey-violet ridge. The top third is pale blue sky with thin cloud.
The paint sits high on the canvas in the flower beds, so light catches the ridges and the red reads as bright and slightly rough, while the sky and hills are brushed thin and smooth. It is a cheerful, uncomplicated country scene with a strong vertical pull from the front grass up to the distant houses.
The narrow upright shape suits a hallway end wall, a stairwell, or the gap between two windows in a dining room. The red carries well against white, pale grey or warm stone walls, and sits comfortably with timber furniture, linen upholstery and terracotta or brass accents in a country or Hamptons-style room.
