About Golden Birch Avenue
A straight path runs from the bottom edge of the canvas to a bright opening at the centre, flanked by two rows of slender birch trunks. The path is built from blocky knife strokes of terracotta, rust and pale apricot, with flecks of green pressed into the surface. Foliage overhead is laid on in thick dabs of cadmium yellow, lemon and lime green, thinning near the middle where white light floods through. Ground on both sides is a carpet of yellow leaf litter over shadowed brown.
The trunks are painted in short grey-black and white marks, upright and repeating, which gives the avenue its rhythm and depth. The effect is warm and bright rather than melancholy, an autumn walk caught at the moment the sun breaks through the canopy.
Suits a hallway or entry where the receding path leads the eye forward, and works over a sideboard in a dining room. The yellows sit well with warm timber, rattan, cream walls and linen sofas.
