About Tuscan Poppy Field
A wide field fills the lower two thirds of the canvas, built from short, flat palette knife strokes laid side by side. Scarlet and orange-red blocks read as poppies, thickest along the bottom edge, thinning into bands of golden yellow, cream and pale green through the middle distance. At the horizon sits a small white farmhouse with a red-tiled roof, flanked by low autumn-toned scrub and a cluster of tall dark cypress trees to the right. The sky above is smooth and pale, washed in cream, apricot and soft grey.
The contrast between the loaded, ridged knife work in the field and the quiet flat sky gives the picture its warmth and light. It reads as a hot afternoon in open farmland rather than a detailed portrait of a place.
