About Autumn Meadow Cottage
A broad meadow of burnt orange, gold and rust fills the lower half, laid down in flat palette-knife strokes that leave ridges of thick paint and streaks of bare warm underpainting. Behind it a belt of autumn trees runs across the canvas: scarlet and crimson foliage, pale yellow birches, and one taller tree near the centre with a slender white-grey trunk and a loose golden crown. To the right the land opens onto still, pale water with a small white cottage and red roof on the far bank.
Low mauve-grey hills close the distance under a washed sky of cream, pink and soft lilac. The mood is quiet and warm — a late autumn afternoon rendered in heavy knife work rather than fine detail.
Suits a living room with timber floors, a hallway above a console, or a dining room with cream or sage walls. The orange and gold field warms grey sofas and linen upholstery, and it sits well beside brass lamps, woven baskets and darker timber furniture. Good over a fireplace in a country-style home.
