About Autumn Forest Clearing
A stand of slim, leaning trunks fills the frame, their bark laid down in rust, ochre and deep brown strokes. Canopies of burnt orange, copper and soft yellow break against a pale cream and blue haze that reads as mist and light deep in the woods. One trunk has fallen and cuts diagonally from the left edge down to a grassy bank, while a second lies low across the right foreground. Below them a slope carries thick dabs of yellow, red and olive suggesting wildflowers and rough grass.
The paint is pushed on with a knife in flat, loaded ridges, so the foliage and flower heads sit up from the surface while the misty background stays thin and smooth. Small dark clumps of shrub anchor the middle of the slope. It is a warm, quiet autumn scene with plenty of light, more about colour and texture than fine detail.
Suits a living room with timber floors, a hallway that needs warmth, or a bedroom wall above a low bedhead. The orange and ochre notes work with leather, rattan, linen and brass, and the pale misty background keeps it easy against white or soft grey walls. Good above a sideboard or a two-seater sofa.
