About Poppy Meadow
A band of meadow runs across the lower half of the canvas, packed with scarlet poppies that sit at different heights on thin dark stems. Between them are small white daisies, dots of yellow and flecks of violet and magenta. The grasses are laid in with long upward strokes of ochre, gold and olive, darkening to brown at the base. Above the flowers the sky is a soft blush cream, almost empty, with faint pale strokes of seed heads and drifting grass breaking the edge.
The poppies are built with a palette knife, so each petal is a thick slab of red paint that catches light along its ridge, while the sky stays flat and smooth by contrast. The painting reads as warm, open and sunlit rather than detailed, with the whole interest held in the bottom two-thirds.
The long, low format suits a wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bedhead, and works well in a hallway where a wide painting fills the run. The warm reds and golds sit comfortably with oak or walnut timber, linen upholstery, cream walls and brass or rattan details.
