About Valley Wildflower Meadow
A wide band of wildflowers fills the lower third of the canvas, built up in thick knife-laid strokes: scarlet poppy heads on the left and right, clusters of violet and deep purple spikes through the centre, white lilies and pink stems threaded between blades of ochre and olive grass. Behind them a flat yellow-green meadow runs back to a line of trees, with two slender church spires rising on the right. Hazy blue hills and a pale, cloud-washed sky close the distance.
The paint is heaviest in the foreground flowers, where ridges of colour catch the light, and thins to smooth, soft washes in the sky and hills. It reads as a warm, sunlit country view with plenty of colour but a calm, open horizon.
The long panoramic shape suits a wall above a sofa, a sideboard or a bed head, and works well down a hallway. The warm reds and greens sit comfortably with timber furniture, linen upholstery, cream or sage walls and rattan or woven textures in living and dining rooms.
