About Autumn Riverbank
A tall vertical view looks across a still river to open country beyond. The left third is filled with slender trees whose canopies are loaded with gold, apricot and rust, their dark trunks drawn in thin vertical strokes against deep green and near-black foliage. The water sits mid-canvas, painted in horizontal knife pulls of cream, pale blue and grey with a band of red reflection along the far bank. Small pale farm buildings with red roofs sit on the far meadow under a soft grey and white sky.
the foreground rises as a sloping field of yellow-green and ochre, cut by a brown shadow, with two rounded scarlet shrubs standing on thin stems and a thick bed of red and orange blooms across the bottom edge. Paint is applied almost entirely with the knife, leaving ridged edges that catch light. The character is warm and settled: an autumn afternoon seen in strong colour rather than fine detail.
The narrow upright shape suits a hallway end wall, a stairwell, or the space between two windows in a living room. Its reds and golds work with timber floors, cane or rattan furniture, cream walls and linen sofas.
