About Boulevard in Autumn
A wide boulevard runs from the lower edge back to a pale blue sky. On the left, a terracotta apartment block sits above shopfronts glowing orange and red, with a woman in a green coat and a small child in the foreground. On the right, a colonnaded building with grey columns stands beside a row of red market awnings. At centre a tree in thick gold and orange knife strokes rises over a kiosk, a street lamp and a white horse drawing a carriage.
Paint is laid on in flat, ridged palette-knife slabs, with the wet pavement built from horizontal smears of grey, cream and pink that repeat the colour of the shopfronts and awnings as reflections. Figures are short vertical dabs, given form by a single stroke of black, plum or purple. The overall character is busy and warm, an autumn afternoon after rain rendered in blocky, high-contrast colour rather than fine detail.
Works over a sideboard in a dining room, along a hallway, or above a sofa in a lounge with neutral walls. The gold and red knife work sits well with timber floors, leather or tan furniture and brass lamps. It also suits cafes and reception areas where a busy, colourful focal point carries a long wall.
