A male lion crouches low at the edge of a shallow pool, head lowered and pink tongue curling into the water. His mane is a mix of dark brown and tawny gold, thick around the neck and shoulders. One amber eye looks out along the line of his face, and the ear is turned slightly back.
The ground is cracked, pebbly mud in warm tan and brown, sharp in the foreground and softening to a blurred olive-green band at the top. Low, golden sunlight lights the side of the lion's face and the wet sheen of the water, which picks up a thin strip of pale blue. It is a close, natural wildlife photograph with a shallow depth of field.
