A single African elephant stands in three-quarter view on a plain white ground, its head turned to the left and its body angling back to the right. The animal is rendered in thin watercolour washes of rust brown, ochre and pale blush, with deeper red-brown pooling along the shoulder, front leg and the fold of the ear. One long tusk curves down and forward in soft yellow, while the trunk trails to the ground in a slender tapering line. A faint rusty smudge beneath the feet suggests ground.

The washes are left deliberately unfinished: the back and rump dissolve into bare white paper, and small runs and granulating edges show where the pigment settled. Feathery dry strokes trace the spine and tail. It is a quiet, economical study that reads as a whole elephant from a distance and as loose colour up close.
