A hillside thick with lupine flowers fills the lower two thirds of this portrait photograph. Tall spikes of pink and soft white bloom stand sharp in the foreground, while rows of violet and blue lupines recede up the slope. Broad green leaves and long grass frame the bottom edge, and a single pink spike sits alone at the lower left.
At the top of the hill a small white church with a pointed steeple sits among dark trees. Heavy grey and indigo storm clouds fill the sky, with a patch of warm light breaking through near the horizon. A tall birch-like tree on the left leans into the frame. The contrast between the dark sky and the bright flowers gives the scene a dramatic mood.
