About Sapphire Elk
A bull elk fills the canvas from the left edge, its body turned side-on and its head lifted to the right. The muzzle and neck are painted in deep sapphire and cobalt, with a long rack of antlers in crimson, rust and violet sweeping back across a pale grey background. The shoulder and flank are built from loose dabs of turquoise, lilac, white and red, laid on wet and left visible rather than blended. A red outline traces the chest and front leg.
Below the body, a faint black and white diamond pattern runs along the lower edge with a few drips of paint running down, and a soft grey shadow falls behind the animal. The effect is bold and graphic, with a calm, watchful pose carried by very loose, confident brushwork.
Works over a sideboard in an open-plan living room, in a hallway with white or pale grey walls, or above a bed in a teenager's room. The blue and red read well beside timber furniture, black metal frames and leather seating, and it holds its own as the single artwork on a large wall. Browse more animal art, pop art, popular art.
