About Harlequin Stallion
A horse's head fills the upper two thirds of this portrait canvas, turned in profile to the left with the muzzle dipping low. The underlying head is painted in deep maroon and near-black, then broken up with flat slabs of colour laid on with a knife: cobalt blue, emerald green, yellow, orange, brick red, tan and two large patches of thick cream white across the cheek and nose. One dark eye, ringed with blue, reads clearly through the colour blocks.
The background is a soft pale grey, with silver-grey and faint lilac drags of paint suggesting the mane and neck falling away to the right. Paint sits high on the surface in short square strokes, some scraped flat, some left ridged. The result is bold and graphic rather than realistic, a horse assembled from colour.
Works as a single focal point above a sideboard in an entry hall, in a child's or teenager's room, or on a white wall in a living area with grey upholstery. The pale grey ground keeps it calm, so it pairs happily with timber furniture, black metal shelving and plain linen without competing. Browse more animal art, pop art, popular art.
