About Soulful Dalmatian
A dalmatian faces straight out of the canvas, filling most of a square format against a flat charcoal-grey background. The head is built from thick white paint laid on in slabs, with black and mid-grey patches marking the crown, the ring around the right eye and the long drop ears. The muzzle is broad and soft-edged, the nose a dark grey wedge with two clear nostrils, and the closed mouth is drawn with a single thin black line. Both eyes are olive-green with dark rims and a small white catchlight.
The chest and shoulders break into loose black and white spots, with a few streaks of gold worked into the paint on either side of the neck. Brushwork is heavy and unblended: ridges of white catch the light and the grey backdrop is scraped thin and flat by contrast. The character is quiet and direct, the dog looking steadily at the viewer rather than posing.
Suited to a hallway, entry wall or living room where a single square canvas can sit on its own. The flat grey background works with pale walls, timber floors and black-framed furniture, and pairs well with charcoal upholstery, brass lamps or other animal portraits hung as a pair.
