About Jolly Jester's Hello
A laughing clown fills the centre of this square canvas, painted from the chest up against a broad field of white. His face is blocked in with flat grey and white shapes, a round red nose, red-outlined mouth and blue-shadowed eyes. A harlequin cap of yellow, pink, green, orange and blue diamonds sits on tufts of black and orange hair. One hand is raised beside his cheek in a wave, fingers drawn with quick grey and red strokes over a red collar.
Down the left edge run vertical bars of yellow, magenta, crimson and turquoise, dragged on thickly with a knife so the ridges catch light; smaller confetti-like dabs repeat across the ruffled white costume and along the right side. The mood is cheerful and graphic rather than sentimental, a circus face reduced to bold colour blocks.
Works in a child's bedroom, playroom or nursery, and equally in a bright hallway, rumpus room or a cafe counter wall. The white ground keeps it easy beside pale walls and timber furniture, while the yellow and magenta bars pick up primary-coloured toys, rugs and bookshelves.
