A single magnolia flower sits on a bare, knobbly stem that rises from the bottom left corner and curves up towards the bloom. The petals are open and tilted slightly to the right, with one large petal on the left and two broad petals sweeping out to the lower right.
The image is black and white with an x-ray feel. The petals turn translucent grey where light passes through, and the folds and overlaps show as dark bands. At the centre, the dark seed cone is dotted with tiny beaded edges. The background is clean white, so the flower is the only subject.
