Three mallard ducks gather at the edge of a pond in a detailed natural history illustration. A drake with a glossy green head and yellow bill rests low on the left, while a brown speckled female stretches forward to drink. In front, a second drake stands upright with wings half open, its head tipped back and bill raised.
Tall pale green and golden reeds fill the background against a cream sky, with rounded lily pads tucked behind the birds. Small orange-yellow flowers grow in the lower left corner. Feathers are rendered in fine strokes of chestnut, grey, black and bright blue wing patches, and the water is a flat slate blue.
