A single peony fills most of this square frame, turned slightly toward the viewer and photographed in black and white. Broad, curved outer petals sweep out to the left and bottom, their surfaces showing soft grey gradients and fine veining where the light catches them.
At the centre, a dense cluster of thin, pale, feathery petals glows against the darker folds around it. The background is almost solid black, with a faint blurred leaf on the right and a thin stem running diagonally toward the lower right corner. The contrast is high and the mood is quiet and dramatic.
