A single butterfly sits at the centre of a portrait-format canvas, wings fully spread and seen from above. The upper wings are pale blue-white with ribbed, translucent bands, while the lower wings carry large patches of warm cream with ragged edges. Fine dark veins run through each wing, and two thin tails trail from the bottom.
The background is a deep indigo blue with a cracked, mottled texture like aged paper or a cyanotype. A thin white dotted border runs inside the edge of the frame. Near the bottom, a handwritten-style caption reads "fig. 3: Papilio ulysses". The look is a vintage specimen plate, in a restrained palette of navy, cream and soft white.
