A weathered timber post and low slatted fence run into the right foreground, their dark verticals standing out against smooth, pale drifts of sand or snow. A long shadow stretches across the bottom left, and the soft ridges of the dune curve toward the water.
The beach bends away in a wide arc under a heavy, streaked night sky. Two bright lights glow on the far left horizon, reflected faintly on the flat, silvery water. The photograph is in monochrome with a warm sepia tone, and the contrast between dark sky and bright sand gives it a quiet, cold mood.
