About Butterfly Study I
A single butterfly sits centred with its wings fully spread on a flat mid-grey square background. The upper wings are almost black at the outer edges, broken by four or five bright white patches and a scatter of small pale dots near the tips. Colour shifts from charcoal at the top to olive and ochre through the middle of the wings, then fades into washed white and pale grey along the lower edges, which dissolve into ragged, uneven margins rather than clean outlines.
The slim dark body runs down the centre with two fine antennae angled upward in a narrow V. A soft off-white halo traces the whole silhouette, lifting the insect off the grey ground. The overall character is quiet and specimen-like: a natural history subject handled loosely, with watery edges and muted earth tones instead of sharp entomological detail.
Works in a bedroom, hallway or home office where the grey ground can settle against white or pale plaster walls. Pairs well with other insect or botanical squares in a two or three piece grid, and sits comfortably above a timber dresser, linen bedhead or a study desk with black metal fittings.
