A rooster stands in profile at the centre of a square panel, facing left. Its head carries a red comb and wattle, the neck and back are covered in long cream hackle feathers, and the chest is barred grey and black. The tail sweeps out to the right in cream plumes tipped with red and charcoal. The bird is drawn in fine engraved-style detail.
Behind the bird, a beige background is covered with faded handwriting, a large flourished "Paris" and a round red postmark reading "Boulogne-sur" with a date. Around the panel, a patchwork of black and cream damask motifs alternates with white blocks printed in red scrolls and more script. The palette stays to red, black, cream and grey.
