A tall bouquet of peonies fills a rounded porcelain vase decorated with a small painted scene of figures on a pale green and cream ground. The blooms range from soft cream and blush to deep magenta and a dark crimson, with dark green leaves tucked between them and a few closed buds near the top.
The vase stands on a glossy red-brown table that reflects the petals, with a small white lace mat beneath it. More peonies lie scattered across the surface, in pink, white, lilac and magenta. The background fades from black on the left to olive brown on the right. Soft light picks out the ruffled petals in a smooth, realistic painterly style.
