A long timber pier runs from the left of the frame to a tall lookout tower on the right, standing on thick pylons that reach down into the water. Lamp posts line the deck and a small pavilion with a pitched roof sits at the far end. A few tiny figures stand along the railing.
The photograph is black and white with a long exposure, so the surf blurs into soft grey streaks. Wet sand in the foreground mirrors the pylons in dark reflections. An overcast, pale sky fills the top half, and heavy dark vignetting and a square format give it the look of a medium-format film frame.
