The view is from beneath a pier, looking straight down its length. Dark pylons stand in shallow water on both sides, and the cross beams and deck planks above narrow toward a bright gap at the far end. The repeating frames pull the eye along the centre line.
Long exposure has smoothed the sea into soft, milky grey, with faint reflections of the pylons on the wet surface. Heavy grey clouds fill the sky above the horizon. In the foreground the sand is rippled and warm brown, a gentle contrast to the cool tones of the water and the sky. It reads as a calm black and grey photograph.
