Four adult polar bears and one small cub occupy a raised terrace with a chequered marble floor in orange, black, cream and brown. The bear at left walks toward the viewer with its head lowered. Two bears at centre and one at right stand tall with their noses lifted, as if sniffing the air.
Behind them a calm teal sea stretches to a pale, distant shoreline under a cloudy green-blue sky. A rust-brown column frames the left edge, and a heavy red drape and a piece of stone cornice close the right corner. The rendering is smooth and realistic, with soft cream fur against deep, warm floor tones, in the manner of a classical painting.
